1Maps not updated since 2007, probably won't EVER be.Nov 12, 2009
DON'T BUY THIS UNLESS YOU'RE TRAVELING BACK IN TIME.

Yes, the price is right, but like most things there's a reason.

V7's website has said "check back in a few weeks" for a LONG time. I assume they've gone (long) out of business.

The maps on this device are so outdated that they're worthless. Any business that's been started since 2007 isn't on the device. Any changes to the world since 2007 aren't available. I was trying to get to the Indianapolis airport earlier this year, but since it's a brand new airport in a brand new location, the Nav 740 was trying to take me to a ghost town. A lot of problems arose from this "adventure."

Even if you go to the page on V7's website to download updated maps, the only thing available for the Nav740 is "original preloaded files" (the map files were last uploaded to their site on 3/6/08, but the version is only 2007.7).

Other than that, the interface is pretty clunky, and navigation leaves much to be desired. Things like "dim screen" for night driving are buried 3 or 4 menus deep... that's simply NOT SAFE for a device meant to be used while you're driving.

I assume this device will soon become just a video player (nice added feature) for my niece or nephew, as it's capacity for helping a driver navigate is dwindling by the minute. Not to mention it wasn't that great a device even when the maps were *kind of* correct.

2Tech Support/ServiceNov 02, 2009
I bought this GPS back in February of this year. For the most part, it's working fine especially if you're using it at old areas as compare to new development areas. I used it for my trip to Oklahoma and I got lost because the city does not exist in its database. I also used it to go to my friend's house in Woodbury, MN I also got lost; it does not have the area in its database.

I tried updating the map, but there is no new (most current# map available for either download or purchase. I contacted the tech support and he referred me to a website that does not have updated map #out of stock).

Just this past Friday, 10/30/09, I went to Michigan to visit my nephew. I was half way to Eau Claire WI, the battery is dead even it was plugged in with its power supply all the time. The damb thing keeps beaping like the railroad crossing bell and then shut itself down.

I was frustrated with the whole thing, - there is no updated map; -; the pre-loaded map that came with the unit was probably 2004 or 05 although it claims to be 2007. There are several websites offered to sell the new map, but once I got to the purchase window, they all say "out of stock", including the manufacturer.

Cost = cheap ($100 or less).
Work = it's working fine except outdated map.
Support = except the useless email response; no support.
Battery = never last more than two hours as claimed by the manufacturer. Mine is dead less than a year (no longer rechargeable) and power even fail with power plug in.
Features = Could be better, i.e. 3d animated vehicle, motorcycle or person in place of the arrow following the route.
Recommend to a Friend = No! unless s/he does not need support or customer service from the seller/manufacture.

I supposed I got what I paid for ($100) as compare to $150 to $400.

1Poor Battery LifeOct 22, 2009
Originally thought not a bad unit for the price. After 18 months, battery would no longer hold a charge. Since there is a two year warranty, I contacted NAV and sent the unit back. The returned it to me and the battery still seems to die very quickly and not hold a charge very long.

2not a fanAug 11, 2009
I purchased this in 3/2008 based on CNET reviews before a cross country trip from IL to Seattle. It was a very inexpensive options compared to the rest. THAT should have triggered a red flag right there. For that one purpose it was...OK. It took 10 minutes sometimes to find a satellite. We had to get this going in the morning long before we were ready to go or sit in the car waiting for the route. once warmed up it kept the signals just fine. I had a glitch here and there in towns taking us weird directions. I found the POI hard to navigate and could not find Mt Rushmore! The battery life is TERRIBLE. If you don't have it in the cigarette lighter, forget it. My charger malfuntioned and was replaced, but the unit was unusable until I got the new one due to very poor battery life.

The maps were outdated and at the time, no updates were available and customer service could not say when one would be available. In my area a new interstate was opened and without that on the map to choose from, this unit is worthless.

So it is now relgated to media use instead of GPS. I use my phone for that and am much more satisfied with that subscription...up to date maps, traffic alerts, etc.

1Too difficult!Aug 03, 2009
I purchased this GPS system so that I could drive without trying to read computer generated map directions. I'm not stupid by any means--very technology savvy...however, after hours and hours of trying to get this system to give me directions to even just 1 location...I'm giving up! If I have to pay more for a more user friendly system, I will!
