Good Unit - Wide Screen - Excellent FeaturesOct 08, 2009
Bought this Unit more than 3 months back. Overall unit was great & it has many features. The wide screen is very good & makes it easy to navigate. The unit has music player and SD card slot where I put my 4GB SD & it's equipped with FM transmitter so you can listen to music, alerts as well as navigation instructions on the car speakers along with unit's built-in double speakers at the back.
The unit has video-in port where I connected it with a back-up camera using Garmin A/V cable & it can be connected to DVD player. The unit also has POI alerts so you can just add points of radars or other things so you get sound & screen alerts 1km or 500m before reaching that location.
I give it 4 star on accuracy of GPS because the GPS receiver is not that sensing & you lost it easily when you are not having clear view to the sky.
Also 3 star for the Portability because this unit doesn't have built-in battery.
Overall 4 star Unit.

My Jeep Grand Cherokee has two power sockets (cigarette lighter sockets): One is on CONSTANTLY, whereas the other is only on when the ignition is turned on. That means that, by plugging this GPS into the socket controlled by the ignition, the GPS automatically turns on when the car starts and automatically stops when the car stops. That is my normal "driving around town" mode. No switches, no reaching, no unnecessary "dialog" with the GPS unit. Just sit back and enjoy.
For long over-the-road trips, I plug this GPS into the other socket which is CONSTANTLY on: This preserves data during food and fuel stops and ensures continuous data on overall trip time, driving time, stopped time, average rolling speed, average overall speed, etc. At the destination, I transfer it to the ignition-controlled socket for local driving. Folks, this is a well thought out system: Give some credit to Garmin for focusing on what counts and avoiding Gizmo-itis and Bell-and-Whistle Disease.
The software on this GPS appears to be exactly like the wonderful, handy, easy-to-use, intuitive software on our two Garmin Nuvi 750's. We don't need bluetooth (we use BlueAnt Supertooth in all vehicles), so we don't interfere with CD's/Radio/etc. We also have no use for the back-up camera feature. Nice idea though, but not for us.
Bottom line: Big, CHEAP, beautiful, CHEAP, accurate, CHEAP, easy to use, CHEAP and more convenient than units with internal batteries (you don't have to interact with it to turn it on and off). It is perfect as a dedicated vehicle GPS. Did I mention that I think pricing it way below $300 is CHEAP for this big screen, especially when joined with the other Garmin Nuvi software virtues?
My only complaint about Garmin Nuvi units is that, on ALL of them, the English lady (who has a decent mellow voice) interprets "drive" denominated roads as "Doctor", as in "Turn left on Maple Doctor" instead of "Turn left on Maple Drive"! How silly is that, Garmin?

We love our Germin 5000. It has a large screen that I can read easily from the drivers seat. I bought a generic cigarette lighter AC adapter so I can bring it into the house to program addresses.

I just got the Nuvi 5000 a couple of months ago and have used it in my home city and on a recent vacation in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Northern Wisconsin. Didn't miss a beat. Found addresses on rural roads and always pointed me to the nearest gas station or grocery. I have another Nuvi that I have owned for a couple of years and gave that one to my husband. He recently used in very successfully in Hawaii all over Oahu. I point this out because Hawaii has addresses that are listed with a hyphen (11-111) and many GPS systems do not allow you to enter an address in this fashion. I've tried TomTom and don't like their user system. I've tried Pioneer and don't have anything good to say about them. I am a loyal Garmin user and recommend them to people all the time.
Addresses are easy to enter. Stores and friends addresses are easy to add to your favorites list. Turns are voiced well and clear. I rarely "disagree" with the directions from the Nuvi. You know shortcuts in your home area better than it does. Only reason I can't give this model a 5 star is because it cannot be operated on a battery. Other Nuvi I own is different model and you can use it in a pedestrian mode. The 5000 has to be plugged in to use.
With all GPS systems, I wish you could create an online account which would let you preselect option changes in driving directions and add stop points along your route. Really, Nuvi's are easy to use and pretty accurate. Oh, and best of all, this is one big screen! Great for minivan's, suv's, and farsighted folks.

I have had alot of garmin gps units.........And in my opinion..........the best garmins to date are the Garmin 660........
and the garmin 5000................they work the way you would expect them to...........I had a garmin 885T.......what a desaster..........it locked up and failed.after a week...........I notified garmin........and they sent me a brand new one in its place.as they were aware.that the 885T...........was a dud.....I had a... garmin 660 and it worked flawlesssly
I"m sorry that I gave it up......however the Garmin 5000 is wonderful and hasnt failed me.......and it has the largest screen to date.............which makes it very easy to see (5 inches)...............and it has dual rear speakers.......
so you can actually hear the Instructions..and comes with MSN traffic...........It truly is a winner
